January 16th: Meeting on a new Community Renewable Energy Initiative for Leicester

Monday 16th January 2012

Friends Meeting House, Queens Road, Leicester, LE2 1WP
7pm to 8.30pm (drinks from 6.45pm)
Transition Leicester’s REconomy project invites you to a public meeting on a potential new Community-led Energy Initiative for Leicester.
We’re looking for anyone with an interest in sustainable energy, community investment and social enterpriseto come along and get involved. Many towns and cities across the UK have now set up community energy enterprises (for example, Ouse Valley Energy Services Company and Bath and West Community Energy). These organisations are run for community benefit and have secured hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment from local residents to install clean, renewable energy technologies in their local area (e.g. on community centres, schools, faith centres or public buildings). They can provide an ethical and secure opportunity to invest savings in your local community, promote energy saving in homes, and ensure that any profits from renewable energy installations are reinvestedin energy projects and the local community.

This meeting has come about because of an opportunity to secure grant funding from the Government’s LEAF grant programme to support this work in Leicester (the deadline is January 20th – hence the short notice!).
At the meeting, we’ll
  • provide an overview of community renewable energy and the opportunities in Leicester
  • discuss the activities proposed in the draft LEAF grant application and agree any changes
  • talk about how we’d each like to contribute to moving the project forward (for example, through organising activities at the Green Light festival in March).

Our aim for the meeting is to form the core of a team who can develop this idea over the coming months.

Please RSVP by email if you plan to come along, to help us estimate numbers in advance. If you can’t attend the meeting, but are interested in getting involved or hearing more, then email Andrew Reeves from Transition Leicester, stating your contact details, and area of interest.

Hope to see you on the 16th!
